Language Support Programme

Programme

The aim at Sage College is to ensure that all students entering the ELD and SLD programme fulfill their potential and reach the required level of competence in English and Spanish that enables them to participate fully in the school curriculum.

Department Objectives ELD and SLD lessons are for those pupils who enter the school with an insufficient level of English and Spanish whether oral, written, listening or reading skills.

My name is Ana Torrente, and I am the Language Development Coordinator at the school, responsible for coordinating the SLD (Spanish Language Development) and ELD (English Language Development) programs. Our primary goal is to assess students’ language proficiency and boost their confidence and skills in Spanish and English by providing support throughout the academic year.

Learning languages at Sage College, through the Language Development Program, offers numerous advantages for students with a limited grasp of the language. It nurtures bilingual proficiency and cultural immersion, enhancing global awareness. Enhanced communication skills benefit academics, future careers, and personal growth. Proficiency in languages opens doors to international universities and diverse job opportunities, among other benefits.

Spanish Language Support (SLD)

Spanish Language Development supports learners who join us when their Spanish language skills are not yet sufficient for them to easily access the mainstream curriculum in Spanish. Our program includes varying levels of support, supervised by teachers who specialise in working with multilingual learners. The program is closely aligned to the language needs of the academic curriculum and aims to support learners as quickly as possible to become able to access the curriculum independently.

Aim

The SLD programme is designed to further the intellectual, social, and career development of our students by helping them to:

  • strengthen their ability to communicate fluently in Spanish at school and in the wider community
  • acquire the English needed to develop their potential and make academic progress within the school and beyond
  • develop skills (e.g., numeracy, media awareness, scientific- understanding, group participation)
  • experience and affirm a sense of self-worth rooted in pride in their heritage
  • develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between their home culture and the value system upon which our school is based.

English Language Support (ELD)

International students at Sage College represent more than 30 countries who come together to study. Because we know every student is unique, we provide an English Language Development (ELD) program and give each student personalised attention and tailored learning.

As part of the Sage College´s commitment to personalised learning and empowering students to be the best that they can be, the English Language Development (ELD) programme supports the learning of students who do not have English as a first language, from their tentative first days at Sage College to their preparation for higher education. The aim of the ELD Department is to focus on improving the English skill sets of those students who study within it, whilst always maintaining and celebrating their own cultural diversity.

This philosophy is consistent and school-wide and helps us maintain a rigorous and relevant pathway that transitions seamlessly between the Primary, Middle School and High School.

Aim

The ELD programme is designed to further the intellectual, social, and career development of our students by helping them to:

  • strengthen their ability to communicate fluently in English at school and in the wider community
