To the directors of Sage College.

Dear Directors

The world is bored with being treated badly; this has gone too far! Animals are dying, the environment is being destroyed…what will happen next?! It is for these reasons, among many others, that I ask the directors of Sage College to help us find a solution. Of course not everything in the world will be put right with our solution but if everyone contributes in their own way this could make a change. I’m talking about recycling! There are many ways that we could achieve this; it is not difficult and everyone could do it!

Add some coloured containers to the playground and we could separate our waste material, making it easier for the people who work at the school. Recycling is a way of saving resources, some of which are not going to last until the end of the century. Examples of these are gold, silver and even copper, which could run out between 20 and 60 years from now. Would you seriously like like to see your grandchildren growing without such important resources? This is becoming a huge problem. Thinking about this reminds me of some of the images that I saw of some birds that had died, and inside their stomachs were large pieces of our plastic waste. These animals are paying for our actions with their lives.

The following was presented by Paula Crespo Sánchez on behalf of Year group 9.

Dear Directors

As proud members of the Sage College community, we are writing to you to raise a concern about the level of recycling in our school. Recently we became increasinglyaware that we all benefit from the products that we produce but we do not take care of disposing of the waste materials.

We think that everyone should recycle to make the Earth a better place as a whole. Here are some good reasons for recycling:

  • There will be more space in landfills.
  • There will be less waste in landfills.
  • When people recycle they are reusing materials, therefore saving resources.
  • In some cases when you recycle you get paid back what you already paid for in the grocery store.
  • Reduce financial expenditure in the economy. Making products from raw materials costs much more than if they were made from recycled products.
  • Preserve natural resources for future generations. Recycling reduces the need for raw materials,it also uses less energy, therefore preserving natural resources for the future.
  • Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste.
  • Recycling reduces the need for raw materials so that the rain forests can be preserved.
  • Recycling requires much less energy and therefore helps to preserve natural resources.

If everyone recycled think how much more space there would be in landfills across the world! The space on this Earth is limited and we are using a huge portion of it just for our rubbish. Many people throw away their recycling for the simple reason of being too lazy to sort it; bags after bags of plastic, aluminium and glass get thrown into the bin and are being hauled straight to a landfill. If everyone recycled their plastic, aluminium and glass they could save of euros a day.

We think that people are not informed about the huge problem of waste in the world. In fact conservation is an issue, and resources and energy aren’t too plentiful. Someday these resources are going to run out. However, the more we recycle the longer we can make these resources last.

If everyone recycled then there would be less need for new materials to be made out of unused resources, instead they would be made with recycled materials. Recycling saves a lot of natural resources because every time you turn something into the recycling centre part of it is reused on a future product.

We would like our community, here in Sage College, to be an example to all that visit us. We can help raise awareness both within our school community and within the wider community of Jerez. That is why we are appealing to you to help us make this possible. We would like to establish a recycling centre in secondary. We believe that by making our fellow students conscious of the material that they are using and the waste that they create, we can help them be active in making the right decisions that will not only benefit the community but on a larger scale, the world. By making the decision to recycle their waste they will contribute to being a positive example and also to keeping Sage College tidy, conscious and looking to the future.

We hope that you will strongly consider what we have presented to you.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Good work Year 9, you have the full support of the Directors.
